Is metal roofing noisier in bad weather?

We get this question asked the most and has probably one of the biggest misconceptions about metal roofing. People often think of a barn roof where the metal is visible to the interior of the structure. On a home or residence, however, metal roofing is installed over a solid wooden substrate. Added to this is the usual home insulation which serves as an additional sound barrier. Research has proven that metal is not any noisier than traditional roofing products.

Do I have to remove the old roof first?

Usually not if you’re installing the metal roof over existing asphalt, or composition shingles (please note that these should only be a maximum of two layers thick). In most situations, the metal roof can be installed directly over the old roof with a synthetic underlayment or felt paper. Another option is 1″ x 4″ wood purlins can also be used instead of underlayment.

What types of payments do WRP accept?

We accept the usual credit cards, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, plus Cash, or Check.

How is a metal roof in extreme weather?
A metal roof can withstand abuse from extreme weather like high winds, and heavy hailstorms, for decades. Metal roofing has a 120-mph wind rating, which is equal to an F2 tornado. Under high wind conditions, metal roofing systems have wind resistance and uplift resistance that is above the new building code requirements. If you live in a part of the country that is prone to wildfires, which we do, metal roofing can protect your home should burning embers land on your roof. In fact, your homeowner’s insurance may be cheaper with a metal roof, so check with your insurance agent as it could save you money.
What colors are available?

Our metal roofing is painted with a Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL™ coating, a unique silicone-modified polyester (SMP) resin system. Subsequently, it’s especially resilient for residential, agricultural, and commercial construction industries. Here is a link to our color chart in case you missed it: CLICK HERE

Will the color fade?
Our metal roofs are painted with high-performance polymers that have exceptional weathering properties.
Over time you might notice a slight change in color due to the settling of airborne contamination, but occasional rain or washing the roof with a garden hose will keep the roof looking like new.
What is galvalume?

Galvalume is 55% Al-Zn (aluminum – zinc) coated sheet steel that is ideally suited for most types of roofing applications. Galvalume is an ideal material for roofing because of its extraordinary outdoor corrosion resistance and resulting long life. It is extremely popular due to its versatility, ease of use, aesthetics, and long-term performance.

Can you walk on the roof?
As with any roof, system care must be taken to not cause damage to the roof due to abrasion or collapsing of the raised portion of the panel. You can walk on metal roofing in the flat area where the roof has support. So most metal panel systems can support the load of an individual walking on them. Please note, appropriate OSHA-approved safety procedures should always be followed.
What’s our return policy?

All sales are final. Please inspect your order before you leave.
Or upon delivery to the building site.

Will a metal roof rust?

Galvalume-coated steel roofing panels are protected by layers of metallic and paint polymer coatings. Industry studies have repeatedly shown them to outperform the corrosion resistance of other coated metals.

Is a metal roofing heavier than shingles?
Metal roofing typically weighs 2 pounds a linear foot. Metal roof systems are considered lightweight roof covering compared to their counterparts. As a comparison, roofing materials and their respective weights per square foot (PSF):
Metal Roofing: 0.7 – 1.5 lbs PSF
Asphalt Shingles: 2 – 3.5 lbs PSF
Textured Asphalt Shingles: 3.5 – 5 lbs PSF
Wood Shingles/Shakes: 3.5 – 4.5 lbs PSF
Clay or Concrete Tiles: 5.5 – 10 lbs PSF
How is the resistance to wind damage?
All metal roofing products are very wind resistant. Many styles have been tested to withstand hurricane-force winds.
Our metal roofing is:
HUD certified for wind zones 1 – 130 mph and HUD certified for wind zones 2 – 160 mph.
Does WRP install their roofing?

No, we don’t do metal roof installations. However, we can provide guidance to you if you’re a Do-It-Yourselfer, and we have a list of reputable contractors who buy from us. Please note we can’t be held responsible for their workmanship or if there were any issues.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?

Lightning is attracted to the highest point. It doesn’t need to be metal as trees are often hit as an example. So, a metal roof has no greater chance of being hit by lightning than any other type of roof. However, there is an upside to having a metal roof, if your roof were struck by lightning, it can help prevent your home from catching on fire because it can dissipate the electrical charge rather than being in one point.

Will a metal roof make my house hot?

Actually, a metal roof can save you money on your AC costs because it has a higher heat reflectivity than other roofing products like asphalt shingles, tile, etc. During the summer it makes buildings cooler by efficiently reflecting away sunlight and reducing the amount of heat transmitted into the building (TSR value – Total solar reflectance). Likewise, it makes buildings warmer in the winter by reflecting inside heat from the underside of the roof back into the building. This good thermal reflectivity translates into energy savings by reducing cooling costs in the summer and heating costs in the winter.
